Novice AAs open their OMHA Finals Series
The Novice AA Gryphons opened their OMHA Finals series this weekend against the Barrie Colts.

Game one was an incredibly fast-paced and tight-checking contest. The Gryphons were finally able to open the scoring in the second period when Ryan M took a smart pass from Auguste T, and riffled home a shot from the blue line while Lucas S, Nate M and Colin C were causing great havoc in front of the Colt’s net.

The tenacious Colts replied quickly to tie it up, and the score remained 1 – 1 heading into the third period, where Gryphon goaltender Tyson MB did his part to help the Gryphon cause, making several key saves to keep the Gryphons in the match. Regulation time ended with a 1 – 1 tie.

In overtime, The Gryphons and Colts put on an incredible display of hockey, neither team willing to give an inch. However, with 24 seconds left in the extra frame, Greg F benefitted from some impressive work from Gage T who caused a turnover behind the Colt’s net. Gage found Greg in the slot who promptly buried the game winner, giving the Gryphons a 2 – 1 win, and a 2pts to 0 lead in the series.

Game 1 also featured some impressive defensive play from Wyatt M and Tyson D who made several important contributions to the Gryphon effort.

The Gryphons loaded the bus for a trip to Barrie the very next day, hoping to continue their momentum. This time, the Gryphons found the scoreboard early in the first when Auguste T. found the back of the net giving the Gryphons a 1 – 0 lead. Greg F. expanded on the Gryphon lead when he converted off a turnover created by the tight checking of Luca R.

The 2 – 0 score stood until late in the second when Gage T converted on a pretty pass from Nicco S making it a 3 – 0 contest. Avery S also drew an assist on the play.

From there, the Gryphon defence took over. Sawyer S, Evan P, Parker W were particularly difficult to play against while protecting the Gryphon lead, and goaltender Finn P held the fort, earning the shutout. The 3 – 0 victory gave the Gryphons a 4pts to 0 lead in the series.

Game three in the series is in Guelph on Saturday night - 4pm at the WERC.
