The Minor Bantam AA team finished off their series against the Barrie Colts in front of a large boisterous crowd at the University of Guelph on Sunday afternoon.
The Gryphons started their series last Saturday in Barrie with a decisive 4-0 win to take a one game lead back to Guelph for Sunday afternoon. Game 2 was a tight checking affair with The Gryphons battling back from a 2-1 deficit late in the 3rd period to tie up the game. But Barrie had other ideas and sealed the win by scoring with 12 seconds left in regulation to even up the series. The series returned to Barrie on Saturday afternoon for game 3 which was another low scoring match. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie so a 10-minute overtime was required. Both teams traded chances throughout the overtime period but the Gryphons came out on top setting up a series clinching game back in Guelph on Sunday. The stands in the gold rink at the University of Guelph were packed with family, friends, and other Gryphon teams, it was an amazing sight. The energy in the arena definitely had the boys pumped up for the game. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back. Barrie did score early in the 2nd period to add a little excitement to the game but an insurance goal late in the 3rd sealed the deal and the celebration ensued!
After everything settled down the boys were presented with their gold medals, red hats and OMHA Championship banner.
The effort these boys put forth throughout this playoff run and through the entire season was unbelievable to watch. They played for each other and they played the right way game in and game out. They definitely deserved all of the success that came their way this season. The coaching staff couldn't be more proud of how they represented the team, GMHA and the City of Guelph. Congrats, boys...that was one heck of a ride!!
