Minor Atom AAA Gryphs Report
The minor atom AAA Gryphs closed out the regular season this week with 2 ties against Oakville and Brampton.
In a tight-checking, end-to-end affair with the visiting Oakville Rangers on Monday February 13th, the Gryphs skated to a 1-1 tie behind some good defensive efforts and goaltending. Oakville opened the scoring in the last minute of the first period, but Guelph came back to tie the contest early in the second on a nifty goal by Sam Black. Brady Smith and Alex Rossi drew assists. The rest of the game the 2 teams traded scoring chances but were unable to bulge the twine due to the solid play of the goalies. Alessandro Gruosso made 18 saves in the contest for Guelph while the Gryphs fired 28 shots at the Oakville tender.

On Saturday February 18th, the Gryphs took on the visiting 45's from Brampton in their last regular season game before SCTA's. Brampton fired first taking the early lead 1-0, but Sam Savery netted the first Guelph goal at 9:53 of the second period on an amazing solo effort off a neutral zone face-off to tie the game 1-1. The 3rd period saw the 2 teams trade goals, with Guelph taking a 3-1 lead on back-to-back goals by Sam Black. Assists went to Brady Smith and Landon Mitchell. Brampton stormed back with 2 goals of their own shortly after to once again tie the game. With the score 3-3, the Gryphon's Brady Smith found the back of the net on a loose puck in front of a sprawling 45's goaltender to once again give Guelph the lead with under 6 minutes to play. Sam Black received an assist. The lead didn't last long however as the 45's battled back just over a minute later to make the game 4-4. Despite a late penalty call on the 45's, the Gryphs offense couldn't recapture the lead. The Gryphons received one point for the draw and currently sit in 7th place, awaiting the result of a Southern Tier/Buffalo game to be played on Sunday which will determine their final position going into the SCTA tournament weekend.
