Congratulations to the Novice A Jr Gryphons on a great tournament!
Leading into the Guelph Powerplay tournament the Guelph Jr Gryphons Novice A team had a very busy schedule! Having been on the ice 3 nights in a row you would think these boys would be tired. They showed all the coaching staff and their families no such signs!
They played hard right from the first drop of the puck. Taking the top seed in the round robin by going 4-0, out playing and out scoring our opponents 23-4. In the semi-finals, we played the Clarington Toros, one of the top teams in their respective league, and beat them 7-1 to clinch our spot in the finals!
In the finals, we were up against a very good team in the Riverside Rangers. The Jr Gryphs came out flying and took a 2-1 lead into the 2nd period. Skating well and battling hard we scored to make it 3-1. But Riverside didn't back down and got 1 late in the period to make it 3-2 going into the 3rd. The boys were able to hold Riverside off until just over 5 mins left in the game when Riverside tied it up sending us to overtime. Riverside had a bit of an advantage to start the OT as the Jr Gryphs were down a man due to a late penalty with 17 seconds left in the 3rd. With that, the Rangers jumped all over the Novice A boys and scored on a rebound to take the Championship.
The Guelph Jr Gryphons Novice A team never gave up and played hard right to that final whistle! Congratulations on being finalists in this great tournament! I think I speak for all the parents, families, and friends when I say we are very proud of you boys!!
