Atom AA Drop Heart Breaker In Tie-Breaker
The #6 Guelph Gryphons traveled to Burlington on Wednesday night to battle #1 Burlington Eagles Gold in a one game tie breaker to determine who would advance to the OMHA quarter finals. In a close checking affair, the Burlington Eagles edged the Gryphons 2-0 to advance in OMHA and send Guelph to the Tri County playoffs.
Guelph and Burlington battled hard through a scoreless first period. Guelph carried the play in the last half of the period and two glorious scoring chances where turned aside by the Burlington goaltender to prevent Guelph for breaking the scoreless deadlock.
The close play continued in the second period with neither team giving an inch. The second period ended with zeroes still showing on the board.
As the third period wound down, neither team looked like they could break the tie. However, with just 3:41 remaining in regulation time, Burlington scored the game winner on a nifty passing play. An empty netter with 31 seconds remaining was the heart breaker for the Gryphons and the Eagles Gold celebrated a 2-0 victory.
The Gryphons now turn to Tri County playoffs which open next Monday evening with a trip to Brampton to battle the 45's.
