Atom Select Gryphons Sink Woodstock Navy Vets
By Bill Johnson

The Atom Select Gryphons travelled down the 401 to play the Woodstock Navy Vets on Sunday afternoon and stringed together several strong passing plays to deliver a rewarding result.

The Gryphons opened the scoring at 5:31 in the first period, after some hard forechecking resulted in a goal mouth scramble that Isaac Hughes capitalized on and slotted in the back of the net.  The Gryphons then scored only 31 seconds later, when a well placed pass out front by Finn Coulson was fired into the top right corner of the net by Nate Taylor.  With 2:39 seconds to go in the first frame, the Gryphons struck again after a shot by Hallahan Johnston was saved, line mates Johnson and Hughes battled the Woodstock defence for the puck, with Hughes knocking it home for his second goal of the game, and Johnson picking up the assist.  With a little over a minute remaining in the period, a Guelph turnover resulted in rush by Woodstock that forced Guelph Goalie Khari Eyers to make a solid kick save to keep the home team off the scoreboard and leave the period at 3-0.

Despite Guelph controlling the majority of play, Woodstock was able to create a two on one opportunity at the 8:40 mark of the second period which forced Eyers to make his second great save of the game, stretching out to extend his leg and make the pad save.  After this, the Gryphons started to take over with Kailen Robertson evading several Woodstock defenders, skating end to end and finishing the rush with a goal in the low right side of the net at 7:07.  Then at 4:39, the Gryphons penalty kill was able to score short handed as another hard wrist shot by Robertson went off Hudson Marshall’s mask and into the back of the net.  Hudson, they don’t ask you how, they just ask you how many?  At the 2:53 mark, Marshall was able to score the old-fashioned way, slotting home a backhander after some slick passing by Thomson and Stone put him alone in front.  The second period finished 6-0 Gryphons.

The Gryphons continued their passing attack in the third period and were able to score their seventh goal of the game at 13:39. Robertson controlled the puck and skated around the back of the net and delivered a pass to the point that allowed O’Hearn to sling a wrist shot towards the net.  Hudson Marshall stopped the wrist shot and found himself alone again and backhanded it in for his third goal.  Robertson was then rewarded for all of his hard work with his second goal of the game, after deking around a few players, Robertson passed to Marshall, who passed it back to Robertson, who fired the puck high into the top right corner of the net.  The final scoring came with 3:21 remaining in the game, after sustained pressure by Guelph, Robertson centered the puck, and Tanner Johnson was able to get on the other end of the pass to knock it home at make it 9-0 and finish the game. The Guelph goalie combination of Eyers and Kurt earned the shutout supported by strong team positional play and defensive effort.  Next game is Tuesday.
