Minor Peewee AA Semifinalists in St. Kitts

The Gryphon Minor Peewee AA’s started the 2018-2019 season on a strong note with a semifinalist finish at the NSE Early Bird Tournament in St. Catherines, ON September 7th to 9th.

A 3-0-1 record in the round robin play placed the Gryphons in 1st place heading into Sunday’s semifinal versus the #4 Niagara Falls Flyers.  In a tight checking contest, the Flyers scored the go ahead goal halfway thru the third period to defeat the Gryphons 2-1, paving the way to their eventual championship victory later that afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, Guelph took a lead 1:08 into the second period as Koen Smith tallied on an unassisted effort.   Niagara Falls tied the game with 1:33 remaining in the frame to send the game into the final period all tied at one apiece.   With 7:24 remaining, Niagara Falls struck for the eventual game winner.  Guelph buzzed the Flyers zone for the remainder of the game but were unable to tie the game and were eliminated with a 2-1 defeat.

It was an impressive start to the season as the Gryphon squad surrendered a measly four goals in five games while filing the net fifteen times.

The Gryphons now resume their preseason preparations before their regular season home opener Monday September 17 against Burlington Eagles Blue.
