Minor Peewee AA Victorious In Home Opener
The Gryphon Minor Peewee AA's kicked off the 2018-2019 regular season on Monday night by hosting the Burlington Eagles Blue in a rematch of last season's Tri County League Final. The Gryphons battled through the fog for a 4-1 victory to open the season on a winning note.
After a scoreless first period, the Gryphons got on the board 3:50 into the secord period. On a scramble in front, Tyler Chadwick poked in the loose puck to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Koen Smith and Matthew Stam drew assists on the play. The one goal margin stood up at the end of two periods.
2:05 into the third period, hard forechecking forced Burlington to dump the puck up the boards to the waiting stick of defenseman Zac Conroy. Conroy walked in and ripped a wrist shot on net that was deflected in mid air by Tyler Chadwick for his second tally of the night. 37 seconds later, Guelph went on the power play. Oscar Johson won the draw to Andrew McMillan who quickly fed it back to defenseman Nathan Schlitt. Schlitt walked the line and zipped a wrister inside the far post just eight seconds into the power play for a 3-0 Guelph lead. Burlington cut the lead to 3-1 at 6:44 of the third but with 5:37 remaining, Nathan Boyle fed the puck to Andrew McMillan who in turn sprung Olan Norton loose who went wide, faked a pass out front, and wrapped the puck in to make the score 4-1 for the Gryphons.
Ale Gruosso (Tony's son) picked up the win between the pipes.
The Gryphons (1-0-0) return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Flamborough to face off with the Sabres.
