A four goal outburst in the third period paved the
way to a Gryphon 5-3 victory over the Caledon Hawks on Monday night in Minor
Peewee AA action. It was the fifth win
in a row for the surging Gryphons.
Caledon opened the scoring 5:22 into the contest
and carried a 1-0 lead after one period of play.
4:18 into the second, Koen Smith tied up the game for Guelph as his
attempted pass out front from behind the net deflected past the Caledon
netminder. Matthew Stam and Tyler
Chadwick drew assists on the play. The
second period concluded with both teams deadlocked 1-1.
The scoring came fast and furious in the third period. Caledon jumped ahead 2-1 just thirteen
seconds into the third period. However,
fifteen seconds later, Tanner Bothwell banged in a rebound to tie the
score. Olan Norton and Andrew McMillan
picked up the assists. Less than a
minute later, Caledon responded with their third goal of the contest to take a
brief 3-2 lead. With 8:18 remaining in
the contest while on the powerplay,
Nathan Schlitt feathered a pass to a breaking Oscar Johnson in the
neutral zone and Johnson stepped across the blueline and blasted a slap shot
into the top corner to tie the game 3-3.
Olan Norton bagged the game winner with 5:58 remaining when he picked up
a loose puck off a scramble in front and deposited behind the Caledon
netminder. Tanner Bothwell and Andrew
McMillan had the helpers. Then two
minutes later, Oscar Johnson added some
insurance as he stepped out from behind the net and roofed a bad angle shot
underneath the bar for a 5-3 Guelph lead.
Ryder Burns and Carden Rogers
Hickman assisted on the play.
Ale Gruosso picked up the win between the pipes.
The Gryphons’ next action will be Friday morning when
they compete in the Guelph Powerplay Tournament.
