Minor Peewee AA Finish 2-2 at Buffalo AA American Cup
The Gryphon Minor Peewee AA's traveled to Buffalo this past weekend to defend last year's Championship at the Buffalo AA American Cup. Guelph finished with a 2-2 record and missed grabbing a wild card spot in Sunday's playoff round by a single goal.
On Friday morning, the Gryphons started strong with a 6-0 victory over the Markham Waxers at the Riverworks outdoor rink. Guelph jumped out to quick 4-0 lead in the first period and added two more goals in the third to get the tournament kicked off on the right foot.
On Friday afternoon the Gryphons faced off against the Montgomery, Maryland Blue Devils from just outside Washington, DC. The Gryphons battled hard but were overpowered by the bigger, stronger, faster Blue Devil squad. The Blue Devils prevailed by a score of 7-3, led by a six goal performance by one dominant Blue Devil player. However, minutes after the game concluded, tournament officials determined that the Blue Devil squad had illegally dressed eight 2006 birth players in the game, including the player with the six goal performance. The Montgomery team was immediately disqualified from the tournament and the Gryphons were given a 1-0 victory to finish the day with a 2-0 record.
Saturday morning saw the Gryphons match up with the Atlanta, Georgia Kings. Or simply put, Atlanta was merely the name on their jerseys, not necessarily where all the players resided. Guelph took a 4-0 lead in the first but then were overwhelmed by a single "Atlanta" player who netted seven goals to go along with two assists as the King squad dumped the Gryphons 9-7. It was a frustrating game for the Gryphons who controlled the play only to miss on numerous scoring opportunities. The loss left Guelph with a 2-1 record.
Needing a win to advance to Championship Sunday, the Gryphons were up against the Kensington Valley, Michigan Rebels in their final round robin game. Guelph dominated the first two periods but were unable to light the goal lamp as the score stood 0-0 after two periods of play. Kensington scored early in the third and the roof caved in on the Gryphons as the Rebels filled the net on their way to a 6-1 victory.
The loss left Guelph with a 2-2 record and a goals for / goals against of 15-15. This tied them for the last wild card spot and the 3rd tie breaker was fewest goals allowed and Guelph was pushed to the sidelines by a team who only allowed 12 goals in the round robin.
