U14AAA Gryphons Take 2nd Place in Barrie
The U14AAA Gryphons got their season off to a successful start by reaching the finals in the Barrie Colts AAA Tournament held Oct 22-24.

The tournament started tough for the Gryphs as the first game was against a very strong host Barrie Colts team that has been a perennial contender for the OMHA Championship at this age group.  The game was goalless mid-way through the second period but a few quick Barrie goals dug a hole that the boys couldn't climb out of and ultimately dropped the game 4-0.

The second game was against a strong Soo Jr Greyhounds team but the Gryphons came out hard and fast.  Starting to see some of the structure that Coach Dane and Coach Mat have begun to implement, the boys got ahead and stayed ahead winning the game 4-3.  This put them in control of their fate to reach the semi-finals.

After convincing wins against the Clarington Toros (6-1) and the Ajax-Pickering Raiders (6-3), the Gryphons finished the round robin in 2nd spot and a semi-final match-up against Lambton Jr Sting.   Lambton tried to play a physical brand of hockey but the boys responded in kind.  Momentum swung both ways in this semi-final but ultimately the result broke in Guelph's favour with a 3-2 win.

Not surprising, the Gryphons would face the host Barrie Colts once again in the final.  This time, the boys knew what to expect and jumped out to 2-0 lead but weren't able to hold on and after a few late Barrie goals, the scoreboard showed a 6-2 final.

While the final game didn't produce the result the team was looking for, the tournament helped build some solid momentum that the team will be able to take to the regular season.  Just as important as taking some good steps forward on the ice, the boys had a great weekend off the ice too.
