U14 AE Silver Medallists in First Tournament of Season
The Guelph Gryphons U14 AE team had a very successful weekend at the Milton Winterhawks Invitational Tournament! Thank you Milton for a well-run tournament.

In their first tournament action in almost 2 years, the crew looked to knock off the rust and develop as a team. The coaching staff had the team ready to compete mentally and physically in just a short time together.  There were excellent defensive battles, incredible passing plays, ridiculous saves and some beautiful goals on the way to the finals!

The boys found the penalty box in the first game - a lot, and Orangeville made them pay for it. It was 3-0 for the Flyers at the first intermission.  Guelph ended up losing 5-0. Maybe the boys were thinking about lunch? Maybe it was the long commute? Either way, they had work to do!

In the second game, the Gryphons were ready to play!  They came out a little reserved from their morning skate but found the net accurately and frequently.  It was a complete team effort and Guelph dismantled Uxbridge by a score of 6-2.

Looking at the standings heading into Saturday's games was a gut check.  The team would have to win both games to make the finals. They were up to the challenge!

Taking on the Halton Hills Thunder in the first game on Saturday, the Gryphons jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.  They relaxed for a few minutes and found themselves tied 2-2 going into the third. They tallied the game-winner with under 10 minutes to play in the third and held out for a character-building win.

Saturday afternoon was a tussle with the host team - Milton.  Win and the Gryphons were in.  Lose? Not an option.

In a tightly contested affair, it was 1-1 at the end of the first. At the end of the second, Guelph was up 2-1.  The Winterhawks pulled the goalie and threw everything at the Gryphons, but Guelph persevered for the victory.  Off to the finals!

On Sunday morning, the Gryphons had a chance to knock off the undefeated Orangeville Flyers (a team that had only allowed one goal against all tournament).  Orangeville jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  Guelph battled back to make it 2-1 at the end of the first.  The Gryphons came for retribution. The Flyers netted another few goals in the second, but Guelph responded with two more of their own.  It was 5-3 for the Flyers headed to the third. Unfortunately, Orangeville would pot two more and seal the deal.

Great work Gryphons!  Congratulations on winning Silver!

The U14 AE team demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship, and class in all of their contests.  We look forward to their continued success as Guelph Gryphon hockey players and as respectful young men.
