Feb 17 Woolwich Wildcats at Guelph Gryphons
A hard fought win on a Puffy Coat sort of night!

It was a good start for the Gryphons on this snowy, snowy night.  Gareth was skating back hard on the forecheck to support the D, while David was pushing Wildcats onto the boards in Guelph’s end, then picking their pockets to flip it up ice to start chances in Woolwich’s end.  Guelph got on the board first as Nolan B put one on net, which ended up on the stick of Nolan S.  He put it across to Ty, who pulled it back just enough to bury it on the farside of the goal from just in front of the keeper.  1-0 Guelph.  A few minutes later, unfortunately, a Wildcat D got a high shot towards net that snuck, wobbling, between a double screen, may have been tipped, and ended up behind Parker, who had already made a couple stops in the series.  1-1.  Shortly after the restart face-off, David raced cross ice, sacrificing the body to beat out a streaking Wildcat forward for the puck to the right of Parker and was able to get it around to a well placed Griffin.  In the ensuing few moments, Cam stole the puck at our blueline, fought through a couple of Wildcats in the neutral zone, stealing it back from one of them again, and created himself a tight breakaway, holding off the ensuing D, and waiting out the keeper’s pokecheck with a toe-drag, sliding it between his legs for the 2-1 Gryphon lead - a goal of the year candidate!

The second saw the Gryphons in the box, for a rare penalty in this game, which led to a Wildcat equalizer… at least the penalty was over then. 2-2.  With the Wildcats pressuring, Parker made a beautiful kicksave, which started a fast break with Nolan and Cam up ice… but a great save by the Wildcats keeper kept the game tied.  A few minutes later, David was doing a great job pinching on the left boards to keep the puck in.  Nolan S picked it up, fired it over to Ty, who hit the back of the net.  3-2 Guelph going into the flood after 2.

While Woolwich continued to push Guelph through the third, the Gryphons still held most of the play, and Parker continued with great positioning and athletic stops (and a high puck freeze between the circles). He was also helped out by some solid D work and good forward support, keeping most of these chances outside and then moving up ice.  The third period was tense throughout, but the Gryphons did well to hold on to the 3-2 win!  Great work by Griffin and Tyler on the call-up.
