Feb 24 Owen Sound Jr. Attack @ Guelph Gryphons
A great game in both ends of the ice!

An exciting start to the return portion of the home and home stand saw a lot of fighting for the puck.  Owen Sound continued the hard work they demonstrated Sunday up Highway 6, but it was immediately evident that Guelph was going to be stronger on the puck and in coverage than that game.  The visitors were Attacking the puck hard to keep it in Guelph’s zone early, but Guelph was keeping the puck out to the edges and stopping shooters from stepping into danger zones, with Parker turning away or flashing the leather on all attempts.  And the Gryphons could also give as much as they were taking, moving the puck up ice and controlling play in the offensive end too.  This turned out to be a great game, played hard in both ends.  Guelph demonstrated great puck possession on their first powerplay, moving the puck around to tire out the defenders in their zone, with Noah and Evan making a few particularly good moves on the OS blueline to keep pucks in.  No goals in the first period, but it was fun to watch.

Through the early second period, Guelph stepped up their game even more, owning more of the Attack.  An OS-end shift was extended by David scrambling to his left on a hard shoot-around, to keep it inside the blueline; he fired it back into play in front of the net, where after a few knocks it came back out to Noah, who pushed it up into the corner for Will.    Will, who was buried by Attack players in the right corner, with every Guelph fan and player silently, or not, yelling “see David - see David,”  who was stepping in, connected a bullet back and across to David who made no mistake in burying the 1-0 Guelph opener.  A few minutes later, and it was Olin fighting for the puck in the corner, he swiped it across to Nolan S who was stopped by a quick move by the keeper, but Ty was there to whack in Guelph’s second.  2-0.  Will kept hustling the left side of the ice, knocking OS passes in Guelph’s end down and clearing the zone, pushing pucks into Owen Sound’s end and taking Attack bodies down along the boards.  On the far side of the ice Nolan B jumped like a Gryphon volleyball player on the net to block an OS attempt to clear the zone, knocking the puck down and throwing it back in front to help tire the Attack keeper.  The last 2 minutes of the second period seemed like the last two minutes of the game, the way Parker and the Gryphons were fighting to keep Owen Sound from benefiting from any of their attacks in the Guelph end.  The Gryphons were pushing the puck up hard, knocking bodies and getting the puck out against a determined opponent.  The period ended with Jesse fighting off three Owen Sound players to get the puck over their blue line, Olin making a nice play to pick it up to get it over to Ty, who rifled a shot off, but just got robbed by the OS keeper.  2-0 Guelph, end of two.

The third was much of the same; great action in both ends, with Parker holding down the fort with a lot of leather, his teammates getting the puck up ice, and pushing the Attack around their zone.  With just under three to go, the Attack went 6 on 5, but Nolan S stole the puck on an Attack lateral, and from Guelph’s ringette line he fired the rock down ice, and hit it on the button, 3-0!  Hard work kept the attack from mounting any comeback and Guelph ended up blanking the end with a field goal win, and a LOT of relief to get a great result over this tough team.  Owen Sound are a big, solid, disciplined, good team… but the Gryphons are sneaky good when they are on.  They love to play together, they’re fast, skilled, and hard-working, and it really showed throughout this game.  They’re also pretty darned well coached, as they clearly took what they learned in practice in response to Sunday’s game on to the ice on this night.
