The Guelph Gryphons U10 AAA team turned in a very strong performance at their first tournament of this young hockey season, coming up short in the championship final of the ‘Early Bird’ AAA Border Classic in Fort Erie, ON this past weekend.
The team finished 4th after round robin play. Their most impressive game was a 2-0 victory over the Markham Waxers, which saw the victorious Gryphons score their 2 goals in an 8-second span in the 3rd period. Strong team defense and outstanding goaltending highlighted the win.
In the playoff-round, the team defeated the Waxers again, this time by a 2-1 score in the quarter-final. In the semi-final, the Gryphons rallied for an exciting comeback victory against the Burlington Eagles, scoring the final 4 goals of the game and avenging an earlier loss.
In the championship final, the team lost to a very tough Southern Tier Admirals squad, who went undefeated over the 3-day event as tournament hosts.
The Guelph Gryphons spring into their first league game tonight on the road against the Halton Hurricanes and hope to build from their success over the weekend.
