Minor Peewee AA's Run Record To 6-1 With Two Weekend Wins

The Guelph Gryphon Minor Peewee AA’s had a big weekend with two important victories to run their OMHA Qualifying Round record to 6-1.  The Gryphons currently sit alone in first place with one game remaining in their round robin series.

Saturday night pitted the two teams that were tied for first place against each other as the Oakville Rangers Red came to town.  Guelph was looking to avenge their loss to Red two weeks earlier.

The game did not start out well for Guelph as Oakville scored on their first shot on net and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  However, Guelph controlled the play and spent the majority of the period in the Oakville zone but were unable to put the puck in the net and went into the first intermission trailing 2-0.

Guelph struck early in the second period to cut the Oakville lead in half.  1:39 into the period while on the powerplay,  Oscar Johnson took a  pass from Ryder Burns at the top of the circle and  blasted a shot thru the Oakville goalie to get the Gryphies on the board.  Two minutes later, Nathan Boyle controlled the puck along the boards and put a shot on goal.   Olan Norton jumped on the rebound and banged it home to make the score 2-2.  The second period ended with the game all tied.

The Gryphons struck for the game winner with 8:56 remaining in the game.   Matthew Stam worked the puck loose to Koen Smith along the sideboards and Smith’s short side wrister handcuffed the Oakville netminder and bulged the twine.   The Gryphons then added some much needed insurance with 3:56 remaining with Nathan Boyle’s shot was partially blocked by an Oakville defenseman but bounced to Tanner Bothwell who walked in and picked the far side of the net to make the final score 4-2.

Parker Shany delivered several crucial stops in the third period to earn the win for the Gryphons.

On Friday, the Gryphons travelled to Brampton and exploded for four third period goals and came home with a 5-0 victory.   Ale / Tony Gruosso picked up the shutout for the Gryphons.
