Acknowledgement to Recent Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Post
GMHA has become aware of video post related to a proposal to establish stronger Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion practices for your association.  

Guelph Minor Hockey Association supports a safe, open, and inclusive environment for everyone.  


In September, 2021 GMHA formed an EDI Committee which established clear goals on creating a more inclusive GMHA.   One of those goals was to engage with outside members who may be in better position to inform the organization of what steps need to be taken.

The EDI Committee forwarded a proposal on May 30th and it was added as an agenda item at the next possible board meeting on June 12th. The proposal was forwarded to the board a few days before the scheduled board meeting.   During that meeting, the board decided to defer the full review of the proposal for the following reasons: 

1. Five new members will join the board on June 21st, representing more than one third of the total board.   Given the importance of this initiative, the current board felt that it was appropriate to have the full support of the new board to help ensure the highest level of success and adoption for this critical work.

2. The proposal involves hiring a professional consultant, as opposed to organizing and marshalling volunteer support and involvement from Guelph’s diverse communities as was originally envisioned.   Given this fact, the board felt it was important to hold a Special Meeting in the near future at which a full presentation could be delivered and discussions could be held.

3. GMHA policy requires any item exceeding $10,000 to go through an RFP (Request for Proposal) process and the current board felt that proper procurement and approval processes should be followed.


The reason for the deferral is not based on devaluing the need for our organization to improve in this regard, but rather to level up our EDI game with the appropriate consideration that it deserves while following GMHA bylaws and policies.


Our membership will hear more from the board and our EDI Committee (who will be looking for additional new members) over the summer as we prepare for the upcoming season.  However, it is important to note that we all need to play a role to create an inclusive environment for our kids to play.
