This weekend the U14 BB Gold Team entered the Oakville
Winter Classic with the goal of coming home as champions.
The tournament started on Thursday with a game against Oakville
Rangers Blue. The boys played and amazing game peppering the Oakville
goaltender who stood tall, and the game would end in a 0–0 tie. Later
Thursday the boys would play the
Burlington Raiders. This game started off as a tight affair,
but the team turned it up in the second and third periods and went on to take
the game 5–2.
After a rare off day Friday, the team was back at it bright
and early Saturday morning with a game against Brampton. It took a period for
the boys to get going in this early morning game but then they took over and
came out with a very convincing 14–0 win. Next was a crucial 4th
and final round robin game against the Brantford 99ers. Win and finish 1st
in Pool A, lose and help would be needed to place 2nd and move on to
the semi-final. The game was a tight and chippy affair and the boys found themselves
down 3–1 in the third period, but this is when they turn it on and dominated
the 3rd period rarely allowing the 99ers to enter their zone, and
scored 3 unanswered goals to take the game 4–3 and 1st place in Pool
A.
This would set up a semi-final against Oakville Rangers
Red on Sunday morning. The boys controlled the entire game, but yet again an
Oakville goalie stood tall, and it was another goaltender duel. The game ended
0–0 and we would go into a 5 minute 3 on 3 overtime period. Again, the goalies
stood on their heads and the overtime would solve nothing. A shoot-out would be
needed to solve this game. It would take 7 shooters on each side to win this
game! Our shooters did an amazing job and Beckett Ross stood tall between the
pipes. The boys would win the shoot-out! We were off to the finals where we
would play the Brantford 99ers once again.
In the final the boys knew what they needed to do. The
team played a great first period and it was 1–0 after one. The second period
was no different and the boys would add another goal to make it 2–0 after two
periods. In the third period the team continued to play well, but Brantford
scored and made it a 2-1 game. The boys stuck to the game plan and made it difficult
for Brantford to generate many quality chances after Brantford’s goal even
killing a lengthy 2-man advantage. Brantford again was very chippy, but the boys
kept their cool and focused on the task at hand. In the end the boys held on
for a very entertaining 2-1 victory to take home the championship!
Congratulations to all
the boys, coaches, and fans on a very exciting and successful weekend!
