This past weekend the U14BB Gold team traveled to Whitby to compete in the OMHA Champions.
For some of the players on the team it was our third trip to the OMHA’s. At the beginning of the season, we all set the goal to be OMHA Champions. The team had a great Tri-County playoff run going 11 – 2 and losing in a hard fought 3 game series against West Niagara 2 games to 1.
On Friday the team wanted to get off to a good start and did just that with a 4 – 1 win against the York Simcoe champs, South Simcoe Storm in the morning and a 2 – 1 win over Milton Blue in the afternoon. Saturday afternoon the team was focused on getting to 3 – 0 and first place in our pool and came out with another solid performance and a 4 – 2 win over Upper York.
This set the stage for a semi-final against Milton White Sunday morning. The boys came out flying and jumped out to a 5 – 1 lead going it to the break between the 2nd and 3rd periods, but Milton came out strong after the flood and we found ourselves in a tight 5 – 4 game late in the 3rd period. The team rallied and stayed with the game plan and came out with an exciting 5 – 4 victory!
This set the stage for a Tri-County final rematch against West Niagara. The boys were pumped and ready to go and came out of the first with a 4 – 1 lead. It was a tight second period with only West Niagara getting on the board to make the score 4 – 2 going into the break. After the flood the 3rd period was another tight period. West Niagara threw everything they could at us but again we stayed with the plan. West Niagara did score with just over 30 seconds left to make it 4 – 3. The boys dug deep and kept the puck out of our zone for the final seconds to cap off an amazing 16 – 2 playoff run and capturing the RedHats! It was a fitting end to play against West Niagara in the final. The two teams battled hard all season.
We are so proud of all the boys and coaches for all the hard work they have put in this year. Also, a big thank you to the admin staff and all the families for all your support throughout the season!
