Team Trainers and Head Coaches,
GMHA continues to align our efforts for player safety with OMHA and Hockey Canada. Ensuring our players have the required equipment that is properly worn is a key factor in reducing the chance of injury.
Please continue to check players are wearing the required equipment and that it is fitted properly prior to them engaging in any on ice activities. OMHA posted a news article
Equipment Safety Reminders for the 2024-25 Season which is a great quick reference for the proper way to wear neck guards, chin straps, goalie danglers and mouthguards.
A reminder that all coaches, bench staff and any on ice volunteers, are also required to wear a CSA approved helmet with chin straps secured while on the ice with GMHA. This includes non-GMHA third party coaching staff such as goalie coaches or power skating instructors. Player safety starts with strong responsible role models, leading by example. A recent OMHA news article
An Open Letter to Coaches Everywhere demonstrates the importance of helmets for bench staff while on the ice.
GMHA appreciates and thanks you for the time you dedicate to volunteering along with your attention and commitment to player safety.
Please see the message from OMHA below.
Ensuring Player Safety This Season
As we kick off the 2024-25 season, I want to take a moment to remind everyone that the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) remains deeply committed to the safety and well-being of all our players. This year, we're placing a special emphasis on the proper use of protective equipment—including mouth guards, neck guards, and helmet cages—to ensure that every player is fully protected during games.
It’s crucial to reinforce that any player failing to wear their equipment properly may be subject to a penalty. This isn't just about following the rules—it's about preventing injuries and keeping our athletes safe on the ice.
As trainers, you play a pivotal role in this process. It’s not only your responsibility to manage injuries, but also to ensure that each player is properly equipped before stepping onto the ice. A quick reminder or check of equipment before the game starts can go a long way in safeguarding our players.
Please keep these points in mind throughout the season, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Together, we can create a safer, more enjoyable environment for everyone.
