THE GUELPH MINOR HOCKEY SELECT PROGRAM
WHAT IS THE GMHA SELECT PROGRAM?
The Select program is offered in conjunction with our house league program and is a bridge between recreational hockey (house league) and Rep hockey programs (BB, A, AA and AAA). This allows all house league players to try out for Select in their particular age group. GMHA offers Select teams in the following age groups: U10/11*, U12*, U13*, U14*, U15* and U16*.
In addition to playing on your child's house league team, and should they be chosen for the Select team, they will also play 3 games a month with this Select team, which are played as home and away games, and have one additional practices a week as a Select team. The Select team is eligible to compete in 3 tournaments during the active season. Select players are to be divided equally amongst their House League teams and there is no body-checking allowed in Select hockey.
If your child loves House League and is ready for more ice time and more competition – Select hockey is for them!
HOW DOES SELECT WORK?
Select tryouts take place in the fall and you must live within Guelph's residential boundaries to be eligible. In order for your child to play Select, your child must partake in the essential tryout process that requires you to register here. If you have already participated in spring rep tryouts, you are automatically signed up for Select tryouts. Otherwise, Select tryout passes are $25 and can be purchased online once announced. Each age group is provided 2 separate, 1 hour on-ice tryouts.
If a player is chosen and agrees to join the Select team, the player still plays with their House League team as well as the Select team for the entire season. Select does not have playoffs or Championships. Travel is minimal (less than rep, more than House League).
There is an additional cost for joining a Select team, although the cost is not as great as it is for a Representative team, parents should be prepared to pay approximately $500 to as much as $1000 per player in addition to the GMHA registration fee. Those amounts fluctuate depending on team fundraising efforts, sponsorships, etc. As with Rep teams, the head coach and team manager will provide a budget for expected team finances at the beginning of the season, and the team may acquire sponsorship or organize fundraising events to offset the team expenses. This fee will help cover your extra games and practice ice, along with the cost of home and away Rep jerseys and socks, additional training opportunities and team building fun!
*Important Information About Select
Please note, that while our objective is to supply the above house league age groups with the opportunity to engage in additional on-ice competition through the Select program, this availability is subject to having enough players to safely create and facilitate those teams. The decision to move forward with Select teams will be at the discretion of the House League Director and members of the Guelph Minor Hockey Association board.
