Novice Selects Remain Undefeated At Fusion Fall Frenzy
The Guelph Gryphon Novice Selects rallied from a 1-0 deficit with three second period goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Oakville Red Devils and remain undefeated at the Fusion Fall Frenzy in Centre Wellington. The win sets up a Sunday morning match up with the Kingston Jr Canadians for 1st place in the division.
The Red Devils struck first in the contest. 5:04 into the period, Oakville's Desmond Brown raced down the ice and made no mistake as he tucked in a wrist shot far post to give Oakville a 1-0 lead. The Gryphons controlled the play during the period but were unable to generate shots on the Oakville net.
The Gryphons offensive fortunes turned in the second period. 2:40 into the frame, after some hard checking by wingers Vid Peteranac and Joseph Piccone, they worked the puck to Nathan Bowman who quickly snapped a wrist shot to the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. 3:11 later, the same trio struck again as Bowman once again lasered a shot by the Red Devil's netkeeper for the eventual game winner. 1:21 later, Brayden Tomei added to the lead as he hustled after a loose puck off to the side of the net and his off angle shot deflected off the goalie and crossed the line for a 3-1 lead. George Dutrizac and Declan O'Hearn assisted on the play.
The Gryphons had several chances to add to their lead in the third, including two goal posts by Nathan Bowman in pursuit of his hat trick, but the scored remained 3-1 as the final buzzer sounded.
Max Heroux and Carter Curran continued with their dependable puck stopping to turn aside any chance of an Oakville comeback.
Nathan Bowman was named the Shoeless Joe's Player of the Game for his offensive prowess to go along with hard checking all over the ice. The Frenzy Player of the Game Award went to Peter Schlitt who checked very aggressively and led several rushes up the ice from his rearguard position.
On the strength of their 2-0 start, the Gryphon's have punched their ticket to the tournament semi finals. Their final round robin game at 9:00 Sunday morning against the Kingston Canadians will determine their seeding in the semi finals.
