Gryphons Top Wolves In Exhibition Action
Submitted By Bruce Schlitt on Saturday, September 8, 2018
The Gryphon Atom AE's won their second game of the day when they edged the Waterloo Wolves on Saturday evening.   It was the second game of the day for both teams.

Guelph got on the board first.   3:27 into the game, winger Kenny Beynon hit Peyton Smith with a cross ice pass as they entered the offensive zone and Smith battle thru two Waterloo defenders to beat the Wolves goalie for an early 1-0 lead.  2:11 later,  Guelph added to their lead when Connor Laskowski battled two Waterloo defenders in the corner and worked the puck loose to Nolan Lodder.  Lodder with his head up, lazered a pass cross crease to a waiting Caleb Davison who directed the puck home.  The first period ended with the Gryphons leading 2-0.

With 1:27 left in the second period,  Nolan Lodder worked the puck up to Caleb Davison in neutral ice.  Davison stepped over the line, walked around the Wolves defenseman and roofed a high arcing shot from the top of the circles over the goalies shoulder to increase the Guelph lead to 3-0.

Two quick goals in the first five minutes of the third period for Waterloo cut the Guelph lead to 3-2.  But with 5:59 remaining, Guelph added an insurance marker as Connor Laskoski ripped a shot towards the Waterloo goal that was deflected by the shaft of Nolan Lodder's stick into the net to make the final score 4-2.

Max Heroux picked up the win in the Gryphon net.

The Atom AE's return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Waterloo for the second half of a home and home doubleheader.
