What makes a professional athlete a hero to kids? Is it the ability to skate fast, score goals, make great passes or saves? What about what they do off the ice and in their communities? When Theoren Fleury played in the NHL, I didn't think much about him except that he was small, tough, fast, and he could score. I paid very little attention to him throughout his career. So why do I wear his jersey at hockey practice now?

The Original 6? The NHL was created in 1917 and there were many teams in the first 25 years of the league, before the NHL became 6 teams. Then, it was a 6-team league for another 25 years before expansion in 1967 to 12 teams. Expansion has continued pretty consistently since then, up to 2021 when the new Seattle franchise will begin.

February is Black History Month in Canada. With that in mind, I present to you this... PK, Malcolm, and Jordan Subban (we'll see Jordan Saturday, I believe), Wayne Simmonds, Dustin Byfuglien, Grant Fuhr, Tony McKegney, Jerome Iginla, Evander Kane, Joel Ward, Georges Laracque, and many more. They all have paid tribute to Willie O'Ree, who was the first black player in the NHL.

Love for the game of hockey includes learning and understanding some of the history. Every Canadian hockey player needs to know the story of the 1972 Canada-Russia series. It created a legacy of hockey in Canada unlike any other event.

Deion Sanders. NFL Hall of Famer. Also, a solid MLB outfielder. Two sport athlete professionally. He once played a football game and a playoff baseball game on the same day. "I gave you a promise.
