The Guelph Minor Atom Select Jr. Gryphons travelled to Flamborough Thursday night for a game against the Flamborough Sabers in what was another back and forth game that kept fans on the edge of their seats! The Gryphons opened the scoring a couple minutes into the first with a goal by Dylan Scattolon. Riley Broderick gave Guelph a 2 goal lead a minute later and Zack Pollard scored his first of the game shortly after that to extend Guelph’s lead to 3. The Sabers answered with their first goal of the game 40 seconds later to cut the lead to 3-1 at the end of the first.

The second period saw both teams trade opportunities, but both goalies were up for the challenge and shut the door until Pollard scored his second of the game with less than 3 minutes remaining in the second period.  The third period brought, again, more opportunities for both teams to score but the goalies were strong once again. Flamborough scored with 11 minutes left to cut the Gryphons lead to 4-2. The goal sparked the Sabers and they had Guelph on their heels for most of the third period scoring with 5 minutes left to cut the lead to 4-3. But Guelph wasn’t about to let the Sabers back into the game and shut the door for good. Pollard scored a late empty net goal to capture the hat trick and seal the game for the Gryphons.

Goalie duties were shared between Jarret “paddle down” Coady and June “flashing the leather” McCormick. Coady refused to give Flamborough any goals low forcing them to miss high several times while McCormick would tempt the Sabers to go high just to flash the leather and make the big save! Another solid goaltending performance as well as some timely backchecks by everyone on the team helped preserve this victory, great job team! Have a great weekend; we’ll see everyone back on the ice Tuesday morning for practice.
