U13 A Tryouts
My name is Frank Tassone and I’m the Coach for the Guelph Jr. Gryphon U13 A Team for the 2020-21 season. I wanted to send a quick note to introduce myself and to give some background on my plan for tryouts.

While this is the first year I will be coaching this team, I have coached for the better part of 20 years, spending time at all levels of hockey including high school. I’ve also coached soccer, rugby and lacrosse in Guelph.

As you can see from the calendar, the tryout process for A and AE do have some overlap. This was dictated by the OMHA, and so we must follow the timelines that they’ve laid down. Unfortunately, it does mean that I will have to make some large cuts relatively quickly to select my team and give Bob Clayton as much time as possible to select the U13 AE team.

Everyone will participate in a scrimmage on Friday evening. You will receive an email letting you know your game time. After those ice times, I will be keeping 30-35 players and releasing the remainder. I believe that at this age seeing the players in exhibition games allows me to make the most informed decisions on who should be rostered, but this approach does restrict the number of players that I can retain.

For those that move on, players should expect to play at least one of the two exhibition games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. There will be cuts after both games. Any of the players that have been released up until this point will report to the AE tryouts starting on Monday. There are two more exhibition games for the remaining A players on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please note that as of September 22nd, the rules for accessing arenas have changed. I would refer you to the article on the main page of the GMHA site.

I know that the tryout process can be extremely stressful for the players (and the parents). I’d encourage your child to give each session their best effort and have fun!
