Coach Introduction
Good day to all Team #3 players and parents.  My name is Tom Post, and together with Steve Purves, we will be coaching your kids for the coming 2013-14 season.  Both Steve and I helped coach the Novice Great White Sharks last year, and had a heck of a time doing so.  Along with Steve Stocco, we say many kids improve by leaps and bounds, and although we were not champions, we played and felt like winners on Championship Day.  I also helped out with the Novice Select Team last year, working under Matthew St. Jean, and again, helped the kids develop into better skaters, passers and shooters.  I look forward to working with kids and parents on Team #3 in the coming year.

Things I would like to make you aware of before the season starts.

The Team 3 schedule, including practices, is available on the GMHA website.  Go to House League, click on Minor Atom, then click on Full Calendar and a calendar will come up that you can scroll through, and it will show you practice and game dates and times for the whole year for all Minor Atom teams.  Just click on Team 3 to just show games for team 3.

We are going to pick a team name, so have the kids come prepared with their suggestions for the first practice.  We will have hats made up that reflect the team name for those that want one.

We will also continue the practice of putting the player's names on the back of the jerseys.  I will advise when we will do that, and will try to have it done for the first game.

I am interested in acquiring extra ice through the GMHA.  It is my understanding that the Rep teams sometimes leave ice unused.  I will try to acquire this ice at no cost to our team members.  However, I would like some extra ice and would like to gauge interest in buying at least one extra sheet per month. Please feel free to email me with your support, or concerns.  Ice costs are posted on the City of Guelph website.

We will focus on fundamentals for the coming year, working to improve everyone's skating, passing and shooting abilities.  For goalies, we will be utilizing them in drills, and will provide goalie specific training using Hockey Canada and USA Hockey materials, so that everyone gets better.  We will use a limited number of drills that focus on these skills, while at the same time utilizing games to keep the kids invested.  Expect little standing around at practice and lots of activity.

Fitness is very important to a player's success in hockey.  Please ensure that your child gets the daily one hour of activity as prescribed by Health Canada.  As the fall and winter season progresses, please avail yourself of the free skating at City Hall, Aberfoyle Community Centre, Community outdoor rinks, as well as the for fee public skates at your local rinks.  Skating is the most important skill in hockey, and we as parents must help our kids become stronger skaters by taking our kids recreational skating.

Steve and I look forward to working with your kids this year, and working to develop the skills they will need in order to enjoy the game, as I have, for a lifetime.  We also look forward to working with the parents, and getting to know you through the course of the year.

Sincerely,

Tom Post
