U16BB's Come Back to Defeat Woolwich
The Guelph Gryphons fell behind early but responded with a four goal outburst to defeat the Woolwich Wildcats 4-2 in Tri County action on Tuesday night.
Woolwich jumped out to an early lead as they opened the scoring just 4:43 into the contest. A Woolwich power play goal 11:00 into the first put Guelph into an early two goal hole to climb out of. Momentum swung into the Gryphons' favour with just five seconds left in the opening period. Off a faceoff in the Woolwich end, Milan Wilson drew the puck back to Owen McNamee who swung it over to defenseman Chace Roffel. Roffel's shot on net was intercepted by Wilson, who back handed the puck into the top of the net to cut the deficit in half as time expired in the opening frame.
Guelph tied the score 1:46 into the second period. Peyton Smith gained possession deep in the Woolwich zone and spotted defenseman Oliver Fletcher open on the blueline. Smith fed a pass back to Fletcher who one-timed a drive past the Woolwich goalkeeper for Guelph's second tally of the night. The winning goal came seven minutes later when Peyton Smith and Caleb Davison broke into the Woolwich zone on a two on one break. Smith fed the puck over to Davison in front and Davison slid it past the Wildcat goalie to give Guelph a 3-2 lead.
Smith then added an insurance marker 5:12 into third as he sped wide thru the neutral zone, cut into the top of the circles and snapped a quick wrister over the goalie's shoulder, using the Woolwich defenseman as a screen. Final score was a 4-2 victory for the Gryphons.
Marshall Cline stopped 20 shots to pick up the victory in the nets.
Guelph (12-1-1) returns to action Monday December 11th when they travel to Acton to face the Halton Hills Thunder Red.
